International Volunteers Day will be celebrated on Monday, 5 December 2005 from 2:30 to 5:30 pm at Conference Room 1, UN Gigiri complex.  

This year’s theme for the IVD in Kenya will be “Volunteering to promote awareness and achievement of the MDGs in the community”.

The theme was selected based on the need to increase local knowledge about the MDGs and engage the community in volunteer activities to achieve the MDGs. A core team composed by representatives from Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO/Jitolee), the Japanese International Cooperation, NGO Council, KARA, UFADHILI and Kakamua and with the leadership of the UNV Kenya have been consulting in this regard.

Proposed activities:

• Market stall to give UNVs, volunteers involving organisations (VIO) and civil society organisations opportunity to expose their work to the public and mainly to UN agencies as most activities will take place at the UN Gigiri complex;
• Launch of UNV website, the first UNV newsletter and brochure on the UN volunteer programme in Kenya;
• Video projection on the Kenya e-government programme rolled out at the district level by UN volunteers (United Nation Volunteers Intermediation –UNVIS- project);
• 2nd National Conference on volunteerism that will highlight the potential of volunteerism and working with volunteers (by NGO Ufadhili Trust)
