Johannesburg, South Africa:
The Human Chain is a campaign whereby over 500 youth from Johannesburg will hold hands creating a chain for five kilometres around the Johannesburg Civic Center to symbolize youth unity towards 0% new HIV infections by year 2020.
To launch this innovative way of communication by the youth to the youth, we propose to begin the campaign by holding the event on 4 December, from the Civic Center Piazza to the Civic Centre A Block Council Chamber passing the “Torch of Hope” amongst each volunteer until it is handed to the Executive Mayor, Honourable Councillor Amos Masondo for the President. We will be pledging support to 0% new HIV infection rate by year 2020, making a plea to the City for partnership with the youth towards this goal.
The Human Chain campaign will be an annual event to mobilize youth towards the 0% new HIV rate by year 2020. The 2005 campaign will be a launch of this concept of youth mobilization and awareness creation about International Volunteer Day on the 5 December. In implementing this project, partnerships were formed with the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Department of Social Development, United Nations Volunteers, and the Human Sciences Research Council Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health and others.
Youth 4 Life is targeting to mobilize 100,000 youth volunteers to pledge their commitment to the campaign this year. By 2010 we aim to have recruited 1,000,000 volunteers to participate in various Human Chains around the country. The campaign also intends to raise public awareness on other issues affecting the youth including volunteerism, moral regeneration, human rights abstinence and voluntary counselling and testing.
