Athens: The International Olympic Committee finally selected 45,000 volunteers, out of 160,000 applications from 188 countries, to assist in the upcoming Games in Athens, Greece.

Volunteers’ tasks include working as administrative support, language translators, media officers, network managers and providing assistance to athletes and spectators.

"Some of these volunteers have been with us since the beginning of the Organizing Committee. Others have arrived at a later date. But what all of them share is their selfless dedication to a common goal: the success of the Games," according to the organizers.

Of the applicants, 65 per cent wre Greek, with the United States (6.3 per cent), Spain (4.4 per cent) and Germany (3.3 per cent) following as the top three foreign countries with volunteer candidates.

Forty-one percent were between the ages of 18 and 24, 35 per cent between 25 and 34, and 11 per cent between 35 and 44.
