Ad de Raad appointed Executive Coordinator of UNV programme
13 August 2004
Bonn: Ad de Raad has been appointed Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. The announcement was made today by Mark Malloch Brown, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Mr. de Raad joined UNV in 1998 as Deputy Executive Coordinator and was appointed Executive Coordinator, a.i., in November 2003.
Based in Bonn, Germany, and administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNV is the UN programme that supports sustainable human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism, including the mobilization of volunteers.
Recent years are marked by continued dynamic growth, an evolution of the culture of partnership and networking, and a strategic decision to reinforce the added value of volunteerism in all UNV operations, building on the momentum created by the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) 2001 for which UNV was the focal point.
The Millennium Declaration and the MDGs, as well as UNDP’s multi-year funding framework (MYFF) are the key parameters for implementation of UNV’s mission.
UNV works in close collaboration with governments, civil society and other United Nations Organizations, Funds and Programmes as well as many volunteer-involving organizations and networks.
Each year, UNV provides a channel for more than 5,600 skilled professionals from 160 different countries to engage as UN volunteers in some 140 developing countries. The financial equivalent of UNV’s activities exceeds US$ 110 million annually.
UNV also coordinates the contributions of thousands of people who volunteer on-line, and manages a global volunteer portal, the WorldVolunteerWeb, which serves as a resource for the recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteer action. UNV is still active in the follow-up to the IYV2001.
Prior to joining UNV, Mr. de Raad was Director of Budget, at UNDP’s New York headquarters, a position he held from 1993 until 1998. From 1987 to 1993, he held a number of positions in what is now UNDP’s Bureau of Management. Prior to 1987, Mr. de Raad held increasingly senior positions in UNDP Country Offices in Bangladesh (1980-1984) and Tanzania (1984-1987) covering programme development and management for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and UNDP itself.
Mr. de Raad is a national of The Netherlands.
