Anti-littering campaign
03 September 2008

Luang Prabang, Lao PDR: Volunteers with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme working at the office of the Governor of Luang Prabang Province participated in an anti-littering campaign with the support of the GPAR LP programme, in partnership with the Water Resources and Environment Office, the Lao Women's Union and funds from the UNV.

Around 200 volunteers joined the anti-littering activities, of which 65 were children from the Orphan School, the Children Cultural Center and the Phongsai District. Donations from UNV volunteers, CESVI, Free the Bears and World Vision Organizations were handed over to the children. More than 40 children had the opportunity to play Recycling Relay Games and 25 joined the poster Drawing Contest.

Besides these activities, children and volunteers from different organizations facilitated the selling of the Orphan School Handicrafts. Citizens and tourists were involved in the Decomposing Game and Collection of Rubbish Activities. This campaign will be followed up by a radio awareness campaign and training in schools. The ten UNV volunteers also donated clothes to the Orphan School and trash bins for the district.
