China strengthens national volunteer campaign
26 June 2006

Beijing, China: China is encouraging volunteer service in its communities and expecting to have a participation rate of eight percent in 2008, up from currently three percent, an official in charge of community work said.

"Compared with developed countries, where 30 to 40 percent of citizens have volunteer service records, China has to improve, especially as the country is preparing for the 2008 Olympic Games, " said Ma Xueli, vice chairman of China Association of Social Workers (CASW).

The association started registration of volunteers on Saturday, to standardize the volunteer work across the country by improving supervision and compensation to volunteers.

The volunteer community service ranges from aiding the poor, helping elderly and handicapped people, conducting environmental protection activities to teaching various skills to community residents.

"It could be any help that meet people's needs," said Cao Zhengguang, a staff with CASW.

"Volunteer community service could help to draw people closer as many Chinese feel distance among people is widening when China's market economy is booming," said Li Chunli, an employee at Tianqiao subdistrict office in southeastern Beijing.

By Saturday morning, Tianqiao subdistrict had registered 1,513 volunteers, and the number was still rising.

China started volunteer community service in 1989. To date, there are about 75,000 community volunteer organizations with 16 million members throughout the country, according to CASW.

During the summer Olympics and the Paralympics in 2008, Beijing needs a record number of 120,000 volunteers.

China has been conscripting "volunteers", and imprisoning or killing them if they don"t "volunteer" willingly in Tibet since 1959. Several million Tibetan nationals have been forced to "volunteer" for Chinese labor details, roads, farms, and the ruinous new railroad. The work does NOT benefit the local people - they remain poor, unemployed and exploited. The fruit of their "volunteering" goes to China.

I object to continuing Chinese enslavement of Tibetan and other native people, and ask that World Volunteer Web disavow and take action to stop the Chinese from continuing these hideous practices. The Olympic spirit is not served when "volunteers" are being killed in the host country. I hope thousands of volunteers from around the world show up to protest China's crimes against humanity. Helping China to "put a pretty face" on their murderous treatment of people is NOT acceptable volunteer work!

Why do you post ignorant comments from people who hate and lie about China, its history, policies and actions? What is the purpose of posting random hate messages? Why is that one the only comment posted?
