China to start recruiting volunteers for 2008 Olympics
18 January 2006
by Winny Wang

Beijing, China: The Beijing Organizing Committee will begin recruiting youth volunteers for the 2008 Olympic Games from June 2006, China News Service reported yesterday.

Qiang Wei, the vice Party chief of Beijing, said the recruitment will be open to youths from all over the world.

About 70,000 volunteers will work for the 2008 Olympics, and the majority of the team will be college and secondary school students.

A Taiwanese official suggested that Taiwan youths in Tianjin and Beijing can host volunteers from Taiwan in their homes. The volunteers also can live in dormitories in colleges because the Olympic Games will be held during the summer holiday.

It's good to hear that your country is recruiting youth volunteers from all over the country. I think it's not only going to give the youth a chance to exchange their ideas, work experience, culture but also more about volunteering. I would love love to be the part of volunteers for Olympics Games.

I would like to be a volunteer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Though I'm no longer young, I'm already 46 years old, it is my ardent dream to visit China, my ancestral home. At my earnings as a school teacher I can't afford to go there, but I 'm praying the Beijing Olympic secretariat will grant my request. I'm a Filipino Chinese, with little background of Mandarin language although I 've never attended formal Chinese lessons. My father is from Fujian, China but he died when we were still young leaving us without the opportunity of seeing his motherland since all of his earnings were spent for his medical expenses. I long to see my acestral home. Please do me a favor. I 've been involved in sports as cach and trainor for our school athletes. Thanks and best regards

I found some info about volunteering in Beijing Olympics. Please take a look. It looks like the exact procedure of registering and screening for overseas volunteers is not completed yet. Stay tune...

---------------------

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) released the "Action Plan of Beijing Olympic Volunteers" at the launching ceremony of Beijing Olympic Volunteer Program in Beijing on June 5 2005.

Recruitment will start in August 2006 and end in April 2008.

.....

The plan estimates that altogether 100,000 volunteers will be needed to serve the 2008 Beijing Games, with 70,000 for the Summer Olympics and 30,000 for the Paralympics.

The volunteers will be categorized as specialized and non-specialized, composed of 10 groups i.e. university students, high-school students, those from all walks of life, those from various regions on the mainland, those in venues outside Beijing, those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, overseas Chinese, foreigners in Beijing, international volunteers and specialized volunteers.

The process of the recruitment includes application, examination of application, preliminary assignment and interview, initial post arrangement, sending enrollment notification, acceptance of assignment by volunteers, verification of volunteers' background.

The recruitment will combine fixed recruitment with that among the general public, combine collective application with individual application, as well as combine online application with written application. An efficient mechanism will be established to recruit volunteers from certain groups in different stages according to relevant processes.

The plan also expounds the qualifications of the volunteers: applicants should abide by China's laws and regulations and should be enthusiastic in public-welfare undertakings; they should have basic knowledge on sports and some foreign-language skills; they should be eligible for the posts they apply and for BOCOG's requirement on the schedule of the posts. Apart from the basic requirements mentioned above, specialized volunteers should master the professional techniques and special skills required on particular posts.

The history and culture of China fascinates me and so does the language. It has been my dream to do some exchange of knowledge with the chinese people in various ways. I can teach them English and they can teach me any Chinese language. But with the meager income that I am getting, my dream is far from real and this is the reason that I am posting this application to work as volunteer for Olympics 2008. I hope you could accommodate me and give me this chance to travel and experience life in China. I am no longer young as I turned 40 in November 2005 but I am fit being an adventurous person engaged in mountaineering sports.

Thanks to all of you, our readers, for your offer to volunteer for the Beijing Olympics. We do not have a role in the recruitment of volunteers for the event, yet are flooded with readers' offers to volunteer. So we're closing the option to comment on this article. But we have alerted the Olympics committee about the huge interest from our readers and trust they'll take your willingness to volunteer into account... We'll continue to post on this site the news of volunteers' role in the Olympics. So, keep watching our site!

I enjoy being the bridge to the two people from two completely different worlds, it requires not only the language skill, but also the real passion and real care. Twice in my life being an interpreter, my ability to translate souls impressed the people I worked for and got me the jobs I like in Canada. China is always home, I can not wait to have this opportunity to introduce my beautiful home into the world. Please keep me posted.

ok, i just found out that people from outside of China Mainland have to wait, and apply online around march of 2007... so we have quite a bit of wait still... i don't know what the content is... so i guess we'll all have to wait... i don't think this site take any applications, so i wouldn't waste any time sending them requests to consider us as a volunteer...

but that's about all the information i know... there are lots of people waiting to apply... so competition is deffinately going to be tough!

Hi China!

I would like to volunteer for the 2008 Olympic this summer. I am Malaysian born and currently have a current green card holder. Please consider me, because I am a good worker and I can speak (not to mention read and write) the basic Mandarin language and I am fluent in English. I want to be a part of this experience in anyway I can.
