23 November 2005
Islamabad, Pakistan: President General Pervez Musharraf today sends off the first batch of volunteers to reconstruct quake-affected areas. The National Volunteer Movement was launched by President Musharraf last 1 November to help speed up earthquake relief activities.
Urging the volunteers to immediately start rebuilding houses, schools and roads, the President said, “We need to reconstruct four hundred thousand houses across the devastated regions and rehabilitate two point five million people.”
The President also expressed his gratitude to the international community for pledging funds at an international donor's meeting held in Islamabad two days ago.
Countries and international organizations pledged nearly US$6 billion to assist Pakistan in reconstructing devastated areas and revitalizing local economies.
