Volunteering is untapped resource: UN meeting
07 July 2005

New York: A Ministerial Roundtable on the Role of Volunteerism in Achieving the MDGs was held on 1 July at the United Nation (UN) Secretariat in New York during the High Level Segment of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The event was co-chaired by Dr. Nasim Ashraf, Minister of State of Pakistan, and Ad de Raad, United Nations Volunteers Executive Coordinator, and attended by senior representatives from 13 UN Member States and leaders from civil society, the private sector and academia.

The discussions were centred on the notion that volunteerism plays a vital role in societies by helping to forge social cohesion and reducing social exclusion and by making a significant but largely hidden contribution to national economies.

It was concluded that voluntary action is a powerful but still largely untapped resource to help achieve the MDGs and that it should receive due attention at the 60th session of the UN General Assembly, which starts up in September 2005.
