A volunteer called Melenin by Paul H. Williams
Kingston, Jamaica: He's proud of his jet-black skin and his African heritage. He is a Rastafarian who embraces unity and oneness. But, this 24-year-old native of White Horses, St. Thomas, is more than that. He is a super volunteer who goes by the very unusual name, 'Melenin'. Such is Omar Ryan, a recent recipient of the Governor-General Youth Award for Excellence in Volunteerism.   Read article

Two volunteers, Paola Toniolo and Maria Paola Profumo from Italy, were in Niger to help develop a study on sustainable small businesses for women entrepreneurs. The volunteers from Seniores Italia, a volunteer organization whose members are retired professionals from private companies and public institutions, were identified through the corporate/private sector (CPS) programme managed by the United Nations Volunteers programme.

Youth and the spirit of volunteering by Chow How Ban
Shanghai, China: The overwhelming response towards voluntary work among Shanghai youth, communities and all levels of society is one of the reasons why Shanghai can develop into a sustainable economy. For a population of 18 million, the city of Shanghai has more than a million volunteers. They are involved in all types of social work and many will be called into action at the Special Olympics World Summer Games starting next week and the 2010 World Expo.    Read article

In May 2007, CIVICUS organised its first ever Youth Assembly in Glasgow to engage youth on topics pertaining to Accountability to Future Generations.
