Publication launch: Volunteering and social activism promote human development and social change 
Today, United Nations Day and World Development Information Day, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme are pleased to launch a joint publication, Volunteering and Social Activism: Pathways for participation in human development. The paper is based on a study undertaken by the three organisations in 2007-2008.  

The background study finds that both volunteering and social activism are important strategies for fostering people’s participation in social change and human development.

This brief provides a conceptual framework to link Volunteerism for Development with a series of aging-related issues. Volunteerism can foster elders' empowerment, aiding intergenerational solidarity. Volunteer Teacher Thailand carries on the English education work of the Tsunami Volunteer Center and so provides free English lessons to children and adults in the Phang-Nga province in southern Thailand. Volunteer Aid Nepal (VAID NEPAL) os a non-government, non-profit development organization, focusing its activities on the progress of disadvantaged, marginaliyed and poorly educated people in Nepal. First published in 1968, Arthur Gillette's comprehensive history of voluntary youth service is now available online. The author shows how service has affected volunteers and the peoples with whom they work, and draws guidelines for the future of international voluntary work.  Read article
