Stand Up against poverty
22 September 2006

Launched by the Millennium Campaign, STAND UP is a global advocacy effort to set an official Guinness World Record - the greatest number of people ever to STAND UP Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals - on October 15-16 2006.

Within a 24-hour period, 10,000 people must physically and symbolically "STAND UP" to communicate their desire to fight poverty and to hold their governments and leaders accountable for promises to end poverty by 2015.

The purpose of this action is to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to publicly demonstrate to policy makers the growing global support for the achievement of the MDGs and for the strengthening of development policies in both Northern and Southern countries.

STAND UP is a mobilization initiative designed to coincide with global mobilizations around the International Day of Poverty Eradication and the White Band Day of the Global Call to Action against Poverty. It relies fully on citizen participation in that it mobilizes all individuals, everywhere, to take part in local, group events around the world through which they use their bodies (rather than their voices) as concrete symbols of MDG advocacy.

To ensure the inclusion of those not physically able to stand up, a symbolic act of raising a hand, wearing a white band (the symbol of the global fightagainst poverty), or holding up a banner with the "Stand Up Against Poverty"message will also be counted.

Stand up against poverty is a good idea to remind leaders for MDGs. But my worry is that there are many words than action which had been taken. If we want action to be taken there should be a fully participation of all people from our leader to the grassroots so that the voices of the poor can be heard.

For example we need our people from villages to be aware about HIV/AIDS, to get proper education on the consequences of HIV/AIDS. Because the more people become aware of HIV/AIDS, the more they could become aware on prevention etc. Seriousness are important on other issues related to poverty such as on how our people could get proper education, improvement of agriculture, etc

thanks.

Once M.L.King "had a dream" but I dream everynight to put an end to poverty all over the world. I know that it is not in my hands, but we have to do a lot to change the big governments' minds so that the richer countries could help even more the poorer ones. I hope that the world can join us on the 17th.(and act immediately in Dafur).

Poverty is not only a responsability of our countries, but also of ourselves in aid to others, by creating opportunities for job, helping in the education of others through volunteering, but most of all, it is a state of mind, of being better every day, and doings things for the good of all...

I wish if you could consider having events in UAE. Huge number of people will be a great help especially if you established an office in Dubai.

Try , please and yo will witness the results.
