Volunteer American lawyers & healthworkers needed in China
28 July 2004

Minnesota: Global Volunteers, a volunteer-sending organization, invites US lawyers to volunteer and participate in its groundbreaking "American Lawyers in China" programme from 9 to 23 October 2004.

Lawyers will be tasked to conduct seminars on American legal issues such as business and criminal laws, arbitration and mediation and international contracts. They will also teach conversational English and legal terminology to law students.

The organization is also searching for healthcare professionals, under its "Medical professionals in China", to deliver and participate in seminars on medical issues and teach English medical terms to Chinese doctors and nurses. The assignment starts on 23 October and runs until 6 November 2004.

Both programmes will be undertaken in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, some 1,500 kilometres southwest of the capital Beijing.

"This experience promises to be a meaningful and engaging cultural exchange. Now, more than ever before, it is important for individual Americans to reach out and work with our neighbours around the world -- person-to-person -- to promote justice, tolerance and understanding," said Burnham "Bud" Philbrook, attorney and president of Global Volunteers.

The service programme fee of $2,595 covers all meals, lodging, transfers to hotel, project expenses and the services of a team leader. Airfare is not included. All project-related costs, including airfare, are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers.

Spouses, significant others, teenage and adult children may also participate by teaching conversational English at one of the many Xi’an schools, from elementary to university level, where Global Volunteers has established volunteer programmes since 1995.

Xi’an, a bustling city of seven million people, is one of China’s oldest cities and served as the capital of 13 dynasties and is the origin of the legendary Silk Road.
