Privacy policy
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme respects the privacy concerns of users of this website and is committed to meeting its obligations under the European Parliament and Council Directive 95/46/EC of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data.

Automatic collection of information
As a general policy no personal information is automatically collected from users of this website. Certain non-personal information, such as a user’s IP address, Internet service provider, operating system, browser type, domain names, access times, the length of user visits and user requests made during visits are collected. This is used to enhance the online experience for users, to provide UNV with information such as the number of visitors and their broad demographics, and to help diagnose problems with our servers. The information is collected by the use of a ‘cookie’.

Cookies
A cookie is a small piece of data sent to the user’s Web browser and stored on the user's computer. Use of a cookie is in no way linked to personally identifiable information about you while you are on our site, so browsing is anonymous. Once a user closes his/her browser, the cookie simply terminates. Information collection via cookies is a standard practice on most websites.

Collection of personal information
Personal information, such as a user’s gender, age, country location, professional background and email address are gathered only where users provide such information voluntarily (for example, while subscribing to the newsletters). In such cases the information collected will be used only for the intended purpose (for example, sending information to users who have registered for a newsletter). Personal information collected is limited to what you have provided.

Subscription forms
The World Volunteer Web uses subscription forms for individuals to subscribe to email newsletters and to join the discussion forum. We collect your email address to provide you with the information that you request. We may use your details to contact you with updates about new content on this website and our events and campaigns. However, you will always have the opportunity to opt out of receiving further information; see the "Unsubscribe/opt out" section below.

Your personal information (email address, gender, country of origin, professional background etc.) that you give us is automatically stored in our newsletter servers (provided by our partner Newsweaver) and will not be sold, rented or revealed to any third party.

Double opt-in process
In order to prevent misuse of our users’ email addresses, we have put in place a double opt-in process for subscribing to the newsletters and joining the discussion forum: You have to submit your email address to receive email newsletters of your choice or to join the forum. Our server sends you a confirmation email to check the validity of your email address and asks you to confirm your subscription. Your reply to this email is necessary for completing your subscription to any of our email newsletters and to the discussion forum.

Updating your subscription
Change the email address that you have subscribed with by first unsubscribing with your current email address. Then, subscribe again with your new email address. All email newsletter and discussion forum welcome messages contain the information necessary for subscription and removal.

Unsubscribe/opt out
We provide unsubscribe/opt-out opportunities for the discussion forum and all email newsletters that you choose to receive. All email newsletter and forum welcome messages contain the information necessary for removal from the database. Removal from our database is instant and automated by our servers.
